TikTok ads for expat audiences

The cheapest reach available and the fastest place to find out which message works. The audience is also considerably older than most advertisers still believe.

Cheap enough to learn on

The most valuable thing TikTok does for an expat campaign is not usually the leads. It is finding out which message works before you spend Meta money finding out.

Reach here costs a fraction of what it costs on Meta, and the platform surfaces content to people who do not follow you, which means a new advertiser can test several angles quickly without a long warm-up.

Take what wins and rebuild it for Facebook. That sequence is often worth more than the leads TikTok produces directly, and it is the main reason we keep it in the mix even where it is not the primary channel.

Cheap reach

A fraction of Meta cost per thousand

Fast learning

Several angles tested in days, not weeks

Older than assumed

The platform aged while its reputation did not

Who is actually on TikTok now

The platform has aged a great deal, and in expat markets there is now a real and growing population in their forties and fifties using it, often for content about the place they have moved to.

That matters because reach here still costs a fraction of Meta, so an audience most advertisers have written off is available cheaply to anyone who checks rather than assumes.

It will not carry a campaign aimed at retirees in Paphos, and we would say so. Where it earns its place is in younger markets like Dubai and Lisbon, and as a testing ground everywhere else.

What works and what does not

The format rewards a specific kind of content and punishes everything else, regardless of how good it is.

Works

Explaining something confusing

The process nobody understands, explained in forty seconds by someone who has done it. Genuinely high performing in expat markets.

Works

Showing the work

Trades, renovation, installation. Process content suits the format and needs no production budget.

Works

Answering the obvious question

The thing every client asks in the first five minutes, answered directly to camera.

Struggles

Polished brand film

Anything that looks like an advert gets skipped. Production value actively works against you here.

Struggles

Regulated claims

Financial and legal creative faces restrictions, and the platform's tolerance is lower than Meta's.

Struggles

Older retiree audiences

In retiree-heavy markets the reachable audience is small enough that it belongs as a test rather than a channel.

How we run it

  • Testing brief before anything elseWhat are we trying to learn. TikTok earns its keep through what it teaches, and a campaign with no hypothesis wastes that.
  • Several angles, deliberately roughPolish is not the goal. Finding the message that stops the scroll is, and rough usually beats polished here.
  • Winners rebuilt for MetaThe point of the exercise. A message proven cheaply and then deployed where the volume is.
  • Same funnel, same verificationTraffic goes to our own funnels, qualifying before contact details, numbers checked on arrival.
  • Reported separatelySo you can see whether it is producing leads, producing learning, or producing neither.

Questions about TikTok advertising

My customers are over fifty. Is this relevant?

Partly. The platform has aged considerably and there is a real over-forty audience in most expat markets now, but it will not carry a campaign aimed at retirees in Paphos or the Costa Blanca. In Dubai or Lisbon it is a different conversation.

Is it worth it just for testing?

Often, yes. Establishing which message works for a fraction of the Meta cost, then deploying the winner where the volume is, is frequently worth more than the leads TikTok generates directly.

Do I need to be on camera?

It helps a great deal, particularly for professional services where the thing being sold is partly the person. Content that shows the work or explains a process can be done without you, but the first-person version usually performs better.

Can regulated sectors advertise here?

With care. Financial and legal creative faces restrictions and the platform's tolerance is lower than Meta's. Worth testing, not worth building a pipeline on.

Do you produce the creative?

Yes. Multi-channel creative production is part of what we do, and TikTok in particular rewards volume of attempts over polish on any single one.
